INTERNSHIPS
The 2025 PLCA summer internship program has concluded. Applications for the 2026 summer internship program will open on October 1, 2025.
The internship program, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Legislative Correspondents’ Association, offers two college students the opportunity to work in the newsroom at the state Capitol in Harrisburg, Pa.
The 12-week program typically begins in mid to late May and runs until late July or early August. 2026's participating newsrooms are still TBD, but past rotations have included news organizations such as The Philadelphia Inquirer, LNP, Pennlive.com/The Patriot-News, Pennsylvania Capital-Star and Spotlight PA as well as stints at radio and TV stations.
Interns assist reporters covering major policy initiatives, the state budget and political developments in a fast-paced news environment. Interns are expected to pitch their own ideas as well as take assignments on a variety of subjects that arise in the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government. Depending on the assignment, interns may be required to shoot videos and photos.
We are seeking candidates who can take direction and have the drive to write quickly on breaking news or turn around longer enterprise pieces. Internship alums have landed jobs at metro papers across the commonwealth and country.
Applicants should be college juniors or seniors with news writing experience and a basic understanding of a democracy's three branches of government. Preference is given to students who plan to pursue a career in journalism covering politics and government, as well as applicants with a connection to Pennsylvania. We will consider graduate students, but prefer undergraduate candidates.
Start dates are flexible, but interns are expected to complete the full 12-week program, working five days a week except for federzl holidays. Occasional evening or weekend work may be necessary, especially in late June and early July when the Legislature and governor may work longer hours to finalize the next fiscal year's budget.
Pay for the 2025 summer internship program was $800 per week. Interns are expected to provide their own laptops and cell phones. The PLCA is not responsible for credit agreements between students and their respective universities.
Those who wish to apply for 2026's internship program can submit a single document containing a resume, cover letter and up to 5 of your best news clips starting on Oct. 1 to [email protected]. We typically close applications early in the next year, and begin reviewing them shortly after.
The PLCA expects prospective interns to complete their application without the assistance of large language models (LLMs), artificial intelligence (AI) or any similar technologies.
