INTERNSHIPS
The application period for the 2024 PLCA summer internship program is now open and HAS BEEN EXTENDED until Sunday, Feb. 4, 2024.
The internship program, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Legislative Correspondents’ Association, offers two college students the opportunity to work in the newsroom at the state Capitol in Harrisburg, Pa.
The 12-week program typically begins in mid-May and runs until late July/early August. 2024's participating newsrooms are still TBD, but past rotations have included news organizations such as The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Caucus/LNP, Pennlive.com/The Patriot-News, Pennsylvania Capital-Star and Spotlight PA.
Interns assist reporters covering major policy initiatives, the state budget and political developments in a fast-paced news environment. Interns are expected to pitch their own ideas as well as take assignments on a variety of subjects that arise in the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government. Depending on the assignment, interns may be required to shoot videos and photos.
We are seeking candidates who can take direction and have the drive to write quickly on breaking news or turn around longer enterprise pieces.
Applicants should be college juniors or seniors with news writing experience and a basic understanding of a democracy's three branches of government. Preference is given to students who plan to pursue a career in journalism covering politics and government, as well as applicants with a connection to Pennsylvania. We will consider graduate students, but prefer undergraduate candidates.
Start dates are flexible, but interns are expected to complete the full 12-week program, working five days a week except for Memorial Day and July 4. Occasional evening or weekend work may be necessary, especially in late June when the Legislature and governor work long hours to finalize the next fiscal year's budget.
Pay is $800 per week. Interns are expected to provide their own laptops and cell phones. The PLCA is not responsible for credit agreements between students and their respective universities.
Please apply by emailing a resume, cover letter and up to 5 of your best news clips in one document to internship co-chairs Gillian McGoldrick and Stephen Caruso via [email protected]. The deadline to apply for the 2024 summer internship is SUNDAY, Feb. 4, 2024 at 11:59:59 p.m.
